To Frances Shaw and all her work with NADFAS and the restoration of the Busbridge Church frontals,

And to Chris Sollars, who has handed over the sound and projector rotas to an unsuspecting Michael Johnston – thanks Chrisfor running the technology in the church for Classic and combined services for several years – this is a ministry which people only notice when it goes wrong! If you have never noticed Chris, it means that things must have been going right! Thank you Chris and also to everyone who carries out this unsung ministry.

After 4 years of consideration and nearly 2 years of seeking permission, we have been authorised to construct the first half of a disabled access ramp from Hambledon Road, across the churchyard and to the door of Busbridge church. We are grateful to the Chancellor of the Diocese for giving his permission. The new path will open access to the church for buggies, wheelchairs and those who are infirm. It will bring people past the church door and to worship. We have 9 months to construct the path and will produce information about the path, its route, and cost in the next couple of weeks.

Often we hear people name dropping – they enjoy the fact that they know some one famous or titled, perhaps it bolsters their confidence. You may even have heard me do it! I know the former Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey, he was one of my tutors at Theological College. Now I have to be honest and say I don’t know him really well, but I know quite a bit about him.

Did you know that in the Bible there are two words for “knowing”? One word means a knowledge of facts i.e. knowing about someone or something. The second word means “intimate knowledge” and it is often used in the Bible to describe the relationship between husband and wife. For example in the old translation of Genesis chapter 4 verse 1 we are told – “Adam knew his wife and she conceived.”

Now you can probably guess which word Paul uses for “Knowing Christ ” in today’s reading, – Yes, the second word i.e. the intimate knowledge of Jesus. I have met many people who know about God and even know about the Bible and even know about the Church, yet it is not that knowledge Paul longs for his readers…and remember he was a very intelligent and knowledgeable man. Today you’ll hear of his longings for them to have an increasingly intimate knowledge of Jesus – and the power of His Resurrection.

Wouldn’t you like to know more? To have a more intimate and rewarding relationship with Jesus? A deeper experience of the love of Jesus and all He has gained for us?

You can, you know!

All welcome to come along to this (free but ticket-only) event. The panel are three nationally recognised theological people and at least one has personal experience of the issues to be explored. I [NB. Simon, not Karen!] have been asked to be a convener on the day for a Diocesan-wide listening morning where different perspectives will be shared from the platform looking at, amongst others, something called  trajectory/social/change theology and how this interplays with Biblical theology.

These events are important for those who wish to understand the enormity of the issues facing the Church of England and how we relate in a loving way to every person both within, and currently perhaps feeling alienated, from God’s church.

Timings: 0900 (coffee) to start at 0930; finish at 1300

Venue: Christ Church, Waterden Rd, Guildford map and directions via http://www.christchurchguildford.com/index.php?page=location

Travel: There is no parking at Christ Church itself.  Those coming by car should plan to use the car park at Guildford (London Road) train station (5mins walk) or one of the many car parks and parking garages at the top end of Guildford near the G Live complex.  There are half-hourly trains to Guildford and Leatherhead/Ashtead.

Cost: There is no cost for the ticket but a collection to cover costs will be made on the day.
